In an interview with NZZ, Dr. Paolo Tasca, a researcher from University College London, highlighted the systemic importance and vulnerability of digital currency exchanges like Bitfinex in the Bitcoin network. Bitfinex, a Hong Kong-based exchange, recently experienced a cyberattack, leading to the theft of Bitcoins valued around 70 million Francs. According to Tasca’s study, exchanges like Bitfinex are responsible for more than 80% of the transaction volumes in the Bitcoin network, indicating the substantial risk and potential consequences such breaches hold for the digital currency system.
